Multimedia Language Labs are equipped with the following:
. Desktop computer
. LCD projector

. Classroom Control System

Hi-Class II (allowing to interact with students)

. HiConverter — for switching between Video, DVD, CD, Cassette Deck or 3D projector

. 3D projector (or video camera) — for displaying documents or objects

   
 


How to use the Control Panel
There is a connection panel close to the teacher’s table (generally at the right).See photo below.

1. Press the Projector ON/OFF button to turn on the projector.

Allow 1 minute for the projector to warm up.


NOTE: No light will be noticeable on the panel.

1.a. To turn the projector off, press the ON/OFF button twice.

2. Select the SOURCE "PC" to display the desktop computer image through the LCD projector.

3. Select the SOURCE "VISUALIZER" to display Video, DVD or the 3D Projector image through the LCD projector (except for Lab A307).


NOTE: This source enables the display of any of the equipment connected to the HiConverter.

4. Select the SOURCE "VIDEO" to display any external AV equipment, such as a video camera.

. If you are on Lab A307, select the SOURCE "VIDEO" to display Video, DVD or the 3D Projector image through the LCD projector.

NOTE: you must also connect the external AV equipment to the Audio (Left & Right) and Video input sockets (see below).

5. Select the SOURCE "NOTEBOOK" if you need to show any files from your notebook.

NOTE: you must also connect the notebook to the corresponding Image and Audio input sockets provided in the panel (see below).

6. Use the buttons "UP" and "DOWN" shown below to control the screen.
   
 


Start using the Lab

1. To start using the Multimedia Language Lab turn on the computer first (before turning on the LCD projector and the HiClass II teacher console). Turning on HiClass II first will result in problems.

2. Log in with the username and password of your email account.

3. Press the Projector ON/OFF button (on the Control Panel) to turn on the projector.

Allow 1 minute for the projector to warm up.


NOTE: No light will be noticeable on the panel.

4. Select the SOURCE "PC" to display the desktop computer image through the LCD projector.
5. Turn on the HiClass II control panel.

The Power Button is located at the rear part of the panel.

 

   
 


How to use the HiClass II Control Panel

The keys at the bottom/left area of the panel (i.e. A1 to H9) correspond to the students' seating positions.

 This is the ID Key of a student.

At the right of the panel, there are the Function Keys that allow you to select the actions you want to perform in class.

All the students’ desks have a student control box that controls the volume of the sound received via the Headphones or sent through the MIC.

The square button (green with a yellow circle) is used by students to speak to the teacher via headphones..

 
 


Common Function Keys

Student ID keys are used to select one or more students in conjunction with various functions.

This is student A1 ID Key

Each Student ID key has 2 LEDs.

. The GREEN LED indicates whether the student is on - or off-line, and will blink when the student has pressed their "Call Teacher" button.
. The YELLOW LED is On when the teacher has selected the student, and will blink when the student is assigned as the Master Student or Assistant, or is in Quick Transfer or Observe mode.

Quick Observe allows the teacher to monitor the screen/audio/mic of each student rotating from one student to another. Quick Observe combines Observe and Select All into one keystroke. The teacher can also determine the viewing interval of each screen (2-99 seconds).

  Press the Pause key to stop on any student screen; press Pause again to restart the rotating process.

Quick Transfer allows the teacher to transfer the Screen/Audio/Mic of a selected student to the entire class by pressing Quick Transfer and the student’s ID key. The teacher can switch from one student to another at any time by pressing the appropriate Student ID keys.

Quick Broadcast enables the teacher to broadcast his/her Screen/Audio/Mic to all students at the same time. This key combines Broadcast and Select All keys into one.

Use the BREAK key to end any previous function and return the panel to its initial mode.

The Black Screen key sends an automatic message to students’ monitor enabling the teacher to get their attention.

The Lock KB/Mouse key determines who has the control of the students’ keyboard and mouse.
When the LED is On, the teacher takes control of the student’s keyboard and mouse.
When the YELLOW LED is Off, the student can operate with the keyboard and mouse.

The Dialog key allows the teacher to speak to students through the microphone and headphones.

The VGA/Aux Video key allows the teacher to display to the class any external audiovisual source through the LCD projector.

Press the Broadcast key, then the Student ID key(s) of the appropriate students

To observe the screen of selected student(s): Press the Observe key, followed by the Student ID key(s) of the students you wish to monitor.

Press BREAK when finished or PAUSE to interrupt cycling.
To blank the screen of all students or individual students Press Black Screen, then Select All to black out all students.



You can black out individual students by pressing the appropriate Student ID key(s) instead of Select All.

To talk with students via headphones Press Dialog followed by Select All to speak to the entire class;




Press Dialog and the individual Student ID key(s) to speak to selected student(s).

To activate the "Quiz Contest" feature Press the Function key.


The first student to press their Call Teacher Box button will cause his/her Student ID GREEN LED to blink on the Control Panel, notifying you who answered first.

To control a student’s computer Press the Control key, then the Student ID key for the student you wish to control. Use the Lock key to toggle control between the teacher and the selected student.

To broadcast one student screen or audio, such as his/her pre-recorded voice to all class Press the Quick Broadcast key, then the Master Student key followed by the Student ID key.

To end the communication with the teacher, started by one student Press the Cancel Call key

How to use the Video, CD/MD, DVD, Audiotape and the 3D Projector in the Lab
To show Video, CD/MD, DVD, Audio tape (any source from the Hi Converter) through the LCD projector:
1. Select the SOURCE "VISUALIZER" (on the Control Panel) to display Video, DVD or the 3D Projector image through the LCD projector.




1a. If you are on Lab A307, select the SOURCE "VIDEO" instead to display Video, DVD or the 3D Projector image through the LCD projector.

NOTE: This source enables the display of any of the equipment connected to the HiConverter.

2. Press VGA Aux Video in the HiClass II control panel.
3. Press the appropriate button from the Hi Converter, according to the following:

NOTE: In case of videotape, check first if it is NTSC or PAL and press the correspondent button in the HiConverter.

4. To broadcast the selected AV source to the entire class in students monitors or in classroom screen, press the Quick Broadcast Key or use the LCD projector respectively.
4.a. To broadcast selected AV source to selected student(s), press the Broadcast key, then the Student ID key(s) of the appropriate students
5. Press BREAK when finished.
 
 


How to record students' voice in computer and use it in class

Steps for the teacher
1. Turn on the HighClass II panel.

2. Turn on the HiConverter

3. In the HiConverter, press the button 5 (corresponding to Cassette)

4. In the HighClass panel, set the Audio Source 3 to MUTE (in order to reduce the noise)

5. Check the audio quality in the headphones.

6. In the HighClass Panel, select the Quick Broadcast key and set the Send Screen key to off.

7. Set the Lock Keyboard/Mouse key to off, in order to enabling the student to operate the computer.

8. Ask the student to start recording using the MS Sound recorder or the Follow-Me software.

Note - If you want to access the students' audio recordings later, you must request Computer Service Centre (CSC) to create a special directory for you.
This directory - "hand-in" - will be created in the network, in I Drive, under your name and it will be displayed as follows:
I:\teacher's name\hand-in\

After this directory is created, students can save their files in this location and you will be able to access it anytime.

Steps for the students
- Using MS Sound Recorder
1. Open the Sound Recorder (in Acessories)

2. Press the red circle button to start recording your voice.

NOTE - you can record up to 60 sec. (1 minute). If you need more than 1 minute recording, you can continuously press the record button as many times as needed before exceeding 1 minute in each time.

3. When you finish your total recording you can save the file.

4. Save the file under the "hand-in" directory of your teacher in I Drive:
I:\teacher's name\hand-in\

Note - in order to save the file in this directory you must log-in onto the network. If you are working in "workstation only" mode, this option is not available.

- Using the FlexClass Follow-Me software

1. Click on the Follow-Me icon to open the software.

2. Record your voice using the lower part of the interface.

3. Save the file as wav or mp3 in the D drive
4. Record in CD, using CD Creator or Direct CD software or
5. Save the file under the "hand-in" directory of your teacher in I Drive:
I:\teacher's name\hand-in\

Note - in order to save the file in this directory you must log-in onto the network. If you are working in "workstation only" mode, this option is not available.

   
 


Finishing the session

1. Switch off the Computer.

2. Switch off the Hi Class Control panel.

3. Switch off the LCD Projector — press the Projector ON/OFF button (on the control panel) twice.

4. Ask all students to switch off their computers, to place the headphones in the appropriate hanger and make sure the task is completed.

 
 


Troubleshooting (before you seek help from the helpdesk)
1. Projector is on but there is no Video, DVD, CD or AV display.

Check if you follow the correct steps to display any source from the HiConverter.

2. Projector is on but there is no image from the computer projected on the screen.

Check if the PC source is selected on the control panel and follow the instructions stuck on the control panel.

2. The videotape’s display is not good .

Check if the system you have selected in the HiConverter (NTSC or PAL) is the same as the tape’s system.

 
 

Final Note
When any of the Lab equipment do not work after the troubleshooting steps mentioned, you may contact CSC helpdesk counter at room A201 (ext. 152/108) during office hours or contact our Lab Assistant at A213 (ext. 147) from Monday to Saturday (9am to 1pm and 2pm to 10pm).
